The largest city and seat is Algona. It is named for Lajos Kossuth, a former president of Hungary who was exiled to America.
It became twice the size after it merged with the former Bancroft County.
It borders Emmet, Palo Alto, Humboldt, Hancock and Winnebago Counties in Iowa and Martin and Faribault counties in Minnesota.
